Updated March 18, 2026

Strong documentation speeds claims and supports appeals. Use this list the day you discover damage and again after the adjuster visit.

Exterior photos

  • Each roof slope straight-on and angled
  • Ridge, valleys, pipe boots, chimneys, skylights
  • Gutters, downspouts, fascia, siding at eaves
  • Ground-level hail impacts on AC, deck, mailbox for date correlation

Interior and attic

  • Ceiling stains, bubbling paint, wet insulation
  • Attic decking daylight, nail pops, cracked rafters if visible

Paper trail

  • Claim number and adjuster name
  • Dated emails summarizing phone calls
  • Carrier estimate and your contractor bid side by side
  • Weather verification (NOAA, local news, insurance meteorology reports if provided)

Frequently asked questions

How many photos are enough?
More than you think—hundreds for a full roof is normal on disputed claims. Organize by slope and date.
Can I make repairs before the adjuster comes?
Emergency repairs are usually allowed—keep invoices and photos of temporary fixes. Permanent repairs before inspection can complicate scope.
